Wind Wind Wind and more Wind
I wish I could bring good news but I cannot. We have had alot of wind this June and has kept the lake stirred up. Not sure it's all wind and barometric pressure but it is all we have to hang it on at this point. The fish just have not been active. We have been able to find and catch fish but the overall numbers are way down. Some people are catching a few fish with some not even bumping a fish. Spotty fishing would be optimistic. We are fishing hard in the next couple of days to try and figure something out. In some of the trips we have had some have been successful in catching a few fish with some of them being rather large as you can see in the picture.
Flies that have worked are the Mity Mouse, BH Electric Black along with the Black Pearl. The best area so far if you can claim a best area this month is along the west side from Staley Springs to Duck Creek.
It doesn't get the wind like Henrys Lake so it has stayed fishable. It has been a real gem. It has fish sooooo sweet. Some of the folks fishing the lake have produced 60 plus fish days. Before someone sends me email these are stillwater fly fishermen that fish alot of stillwater producing these numbers. However, right now the average person can boat 15 to 25 fish if fishing the right line and flies. Some of the larger fish have started to show themselves along with the smaller cutts and brook trout. The early fishing was on chironomids and leech patterns. Most recently they have switched to the Damsels. We will get a little midge action but mostly it's the Damsel hatch going full swing. They really hit the flies hard and making the reel sing. The weather and bug activity may play a part in how long the fish stays on the bite.
We have developed a few flies that have worked really well for the chironomids but we have not named them yet. We have also done well with the Denny Rickard stillwater patterns like the Peacock Callibaetis. Now that the Damsels are here the patterns that have been working are the Cheater Damsel and the Flash Olive Damsel that Bill Schiess created for Henrys Lake. We also have some new patterns that have been effective on the lake that have not been named yet. The Black Pearl, Pumpkin and the CC fly have been good bets to have as well.
The best places to fish--- all over the lake.
If you want peace, tranquility and a place to catch fish this is it.
