Late Fall Fly Fishing
11-05-2007

Fall started with some right nasty weather but like the abnormal summer we have had the fall has been no different. Fall has seen some really cold mornings with some real sunny skies and mild temperatures in the afternoons. On several occasions I was fishing with short sleeve shirt. Just when that seems really nice, wham a storm hits the area and reminds you sharply that this is fall. This can all happen in less than two days and sometimes all in the same day.
Some of the early snows recently had made me scurry around faster than normal trying to get the last of the “have to do's” before winter arrives. With the sunny and warmer than normal November the question is, do I fish or finish the “have to do's. Well I can tell you I have done the only thing a fisherman can do, Fishhhhh!Hope everyone has been out getting the last bit of fly fishing in before it turns nasty.

Henrys Lake

Henrys Lake has perked up some the last 3 to 4 weeks. People are picking up fish in several places around the lake. The current areas that are producing are the Cliff's, Staley's, North Shore being the hottest places. Howard creek and some of the other areas are still a hit and miss deal. The fishing for the most part has been great some days for some and slow for others and some days have been slow for everyone. The nice thing is that Henrys is finally producing the fishing that the lake is known for. Currently it is hard to decide what day you're going to get as the fish are moving a lot from place to place. Key ingredients to keep in mind, place, position, line and fly selection are critical.
This year for some reason the smaller fish have gotten into the action. Maybe it's just me but I have seen more two year old fish taken than in other years. Right now the fish being caught are the 2 year old fish on up to the big pigs. The three year old fish (17” to 19”) are what most people are catching. Some really nice brook trout are also being taken and more of them than in previous years. Currently they are missing in action and not many have been taken in the last few weeks. The stocking program on these fish has really started to show. The fish when they have been active they have really smacked those flies. It has been fun!!! Just beware if you are traveling you might hit a hot day and you might not.

The flies for the most part are the standard flies for fall. Blacks and Browns being the best colors overall. We have been experimenting with some new stuff that has also showed some promise. Have to stay tuned for more info if they continue to produce fish. Some days they want a more subtle fly and then other days things with a little more flash are in order. The weather can be fickle this fall and is playing a large part on the fishing and the catching.

Sheridan Lake

Sheridan is still producing well. The fish have scattered throughout the lake trying to get in as much food as they can before winter sets in. The mornings have been a little slower but the later mornings and afternoons have produced well. Most of the fish seem to be hanging in close to the weed beds and shallows looking for bugs. We have seen some Midge activity that is still bringing fish to the surface. The fish have not been shy and have been really smacking things.
The standard fall flies are working along with some new patterns that have been developed. Zonker and Caddis nymph patterns seem to be the hot ticket right now. The Black Peril, Big Red, Pumpkin and the Purple Show Girl are still great flies for this time of year.
