Hope everyone is handling the transition from summer to fall in fine fashion. I'm one who enters the fall season with a little grumbling. I hate to be cold but once I'm into it then well the fishing bug kicks back in and off I go the remainder of the season. However, the older I get the more I go kicking and grumbling. I finally had some time to get this newsletter out. I gave my wife the day off---ok she told me she was taking the day off and I was tending "Shock n Awe". She is growing as fast as the fish in Henrys and Sherdian Lake. I think in a few more month I will have to test out her skills with the fly rod! Ok, maybe a few more months before she can hold one :)
We were going into fall slowly until today the 15th of September. Rain showers on the 15th followed by SNOW!! showers on the 16th at Island Park, can you believe it! This cool weather will really help the lakes water temp cool off and in a hurry. Previously to this last cold front the water temp remained high and the fish unresponsive at times. The early mornings have been the best and the evenings are a little slow. If you caught the right day with the lake being a little cooler the fishing was a lot better. One day last week I fished and the trip went well and we steadily caught fish through out the morning on various flies. We had some cloud cover in the morning which helped a lot. Had to work at it a little but found some different things that worked. It was a lot better fishing than the previous hot blue bird days we have had through most of August. When we had those the fish would open there mouths and treat us with some stronger bites and longer periods of activity. We had a trip 4 days later. The water temp was back to 64 degrees and the fish had a hard time opening there mouths. We again caught a few fish but not even close to the trip four days prior.
We have had some big fish caught during this period that anyone would love. The fish being caught are ranging from 5 lbs with some over the 12lb mark. Not sure what happened or why but the big fish woke up a little and gave some people a real treat. The numbers being caught are still slow in coming but they are coming. Brook Trout are really coloring up and looking really well. Someone turned one in to the taxidermy that was right at 6lbs. Who wouldn't like to catch a Brookie that big!
Long story short---it's going to get better and better as it cooooools down. This latest cold front should really get things going in that direction. Sunday morning the air temp in Island Park was 27 degrees you all know what that means for Island Park, Snow!! The forecast for this week is rain and snow showers. This really out to chill the lake down.
The fish are scattered all over the lake at this point. The best producing areas have been Staley Springs, North Shore, Cliffs, County Boat Dock area and the State Boat Dock area. The best flies—hard to say at this point. It seems more dependant on if the fish were on the feed or not. When the fish are actively feeding most everything seemed to work. Flies like the Mity Mouse, BH Electric Black, Brown Crystal being at the top of the list. The Henrys Lake Renegade and the Half Assed Renegade still are a good bet. Flies to look at coming up in the fall are the Hot Chocolate, Laurels Desire and the Purple Show girl. Leech patterns will be at the top of all our lists or should be.
Remember, as the fishing heats up this fall the writing of newsletters will be questionable but I will try hard to keep people up to date. If all else fails give me a jingle or send me an email with any questions you might have.
****Remember the Fly Shop is only open Friday Afternoon and Saturday unless a guide trip happens. Chris that works in the shop would rather be fishing and I would rather have him fishing. If you need anything just call, several of us are up in the area most of the time.
You can Mail Order any flies, fly tying materials, rods & reels along with anything else you might need.
It's going to get funnnnnnn.
tight lines to all
Lynn Scott
