Fly Fishing Newsletter
8-21-2006

Hope everyone is doing well this summer. It seems to have been a very warm one and hasn't quite lasted long enough. It's been a day or two since our last newsletter. I know, I know, I should keep them coming more often. Some have been giving me grief about it so I will work more diligent in getting these out to you. I was able to spend some fun time up in the Yellowstone Park area and do some things with the family. It was nice to take a small break in the action or at least slow it down some.

Henry's Lake

We were asked these last couple of weeks, were is a good place to fish. Our answer has been the South Fork, Yellowstone Park and places like this. Why, well we could see it coming just like clock work. The temperatures began to climb and so did the water temperatures. The fishing decreases accordingly almost until there was no fish to be had on Henry's. For the last few weeks there have been some successes on Henrys or at least some reported to having had such. Are time spent the last three weeks has been slim to none. There has been a small windows of time early in the morning and the evening that a person has been able to catch some fish. When I small window I mean small window with about an hour of real fish catching time. Then the numbers were on the slim side as well. When we did catch some fish they seemed to still want the smaller stuff like the Mity Mouse, Henry's Lake Renegade and flies like these.

Keep in mind that in stillwater fishing this is not uncommon. The real difference this year seems that the air temperatures were really hot more so than normal and really put a clamp on the fish. This will change. When? The daytime and especially the night time temperatures are coming down. This will drop the water temperature down and the fish will open their mouths again. As fall approaches---yes Fall is approaching! The fish will start in earnest their fall feed routine which is eat everything and anything. If it's anything like the June thru July fishing we are in for a treat.

Get the last of the yard work done and the last of the honey do's as the fall is going to be sweeeet!

Sheridan Lake

This fishery has been just superb this year right on into the summer. We have had a super damsel hatch and those that fished it during this time will attest. It just was awesome. We did have some slowing down similar to Henry's but the Lake stayed pretty steady. If the conditions were right with a little breeze you still had fish days into the 20's or more. When the conditions were rotten--full sun, no wind, clear water it was a little tougher. We always caught fish and had a great time however. Where Mike is able to adjust the flow of Sheridan Creek we can stave off the Summer Doldrums significantly.

The fish moved from Damsel Patterns to Mayfly Nymphs, Leech Patterns and Terrestrials. We had some good times with Pheasant Tails, Brown and Black Leeches, Turks and several other patterns in these categories.

***The fish at Sheridan like at Henrys are on the move as Fall approaches. The big ones are getting Hungry! They are becoming a factor as the lake conditions change. It's going to happen quick and it's going to be fun give us a call!

After Labor Weekend the shop will only be open on Friday afternoons and Saturdays. If you need anything just give me a call at 208-390-2177. We will be spending alot of time in the area with the great fall fishing just not in the shop as much. So just call and we can arrange to meet and get the supplies you might need.
