Henry's Lake
The fishing has been a little on the strange side so far this year. Seems like sometimes every year is weird or has some strange twist to it. Something to ponder! We seem to be doing better in the evenings than in the mornings last few weeks which is a little different than years past. This current week has started out looking like mornings might be the ticket. If the fish aren't causing frustration Mother Nature keeps rolling in the thunderstorms that cool down the lake. Not to mention the WIND!! I hate the wind. The cold air and cold water slows the bugs down which in turn slows the fishing down. Usually this time of year the storms don't mess it up too bad or for too long thank goodness. These storms and the cool nights and days have so far kept the Damsel hatch on hold. If we get some consistent warm weather I think they will just explode.
So far, if you have happened onto one of those great days and catch it just right as some of you can attest. It's great to awesome! For those that catch the slower times they still catch fish but not as many. Overall we have had some really good times this last week on Henry's. We have had really good success with big fish and the numbers are increasing. I know someone this last Friday was made a Henry's lake believer. He had one of those awesome times on Henry's. He boated some really nice fish in that 3 to 4 pound category with one taking him to the cleaners. Stunned and wowed would be words that could be expressed. Not sure I can print a few of the words used.
The areas producing at this point are both the west and east sides of the lake for fly fishermen. The cliffs and the middle are producing fish for the garden tackle folks. However, one of our guides had some buddies try off the cliffs in their tubes and did well. Stayley's is still producing fish along with the County Boat Dock area. The A Frame started producing until the Damsels felt like it was too cold to come out and run the gauntlet of big toothed hybrids. The Duck creek area is a good bet as well. The fish are not in real close yet but that should change when the Damsels get going.
The flies too keep handy are the BH Electric Black, Brown Crystal Bugger along with some of the Olive type flies imitating the Damsels. Look for the Peacock AH, Cheater Damsel and others to really kick it in gear.
I have no Piggie Pictures yet to show but they are coming promise. Bill and I have passed on the lake and have yet to exchange pictures. Mine are on a camera phone because I forgot my camera and do not know how to download them off the phone yet. New phone. I used to have time to figure things out like that but Baby ShocknAwe well--she takes up the time. I will show some really nice fish however that I did get pictures on a real camera this last week. One of the guides says he is going send some to me and hasn't yet. I wonder if he will read this part. I wanted to get the information out and not wait for the really big pig pictures but they will be coming and they are being caught.
Sheridan Lake
Sheridan has produced some really nice numbers this last week. We are still not getting the big fish to come out and play just yet. I think they are saving themselves for the Damsel Dance. They will come out and play just wait and see. When things were starting to wind up we did see them for a brief moment then disappeared when the water temperature slowed things down again. We are seeing some nice Midge hatches, along with a few Caddis and Callibaetis. The Cutthroat trout are starting to show their stuff. Some of the cutts are about 8 to 12 inches and gaining ground fast with all the feed. They probably won¡¦t play a significant role until next year. I still think they will give those that fish Sheridan some really nice dry fly action this next year. Stay tuned!
I did get a great picture of a "Feathered Fishermen". Take a peek.
The best areas on the lake right now are at the west end of the lake. You can catch them trolling a bugger or posting up and casting to them. The flies still producing are, The Pumpkin, Green Hornet along with Chronomids fished with a dry fly line. The Pheasant tails and Birds Nest type flies will start coming into play shortly and should produce well like they did last year when the Caddis start coming off more abundantly.
