Fly Fishing Newsletter
6-14-2006

Sorry it's taken so long on getting a report out. We are still kicking around, just very busy. This year, as some of you know by now, we have a new little addition to our house and she screams everyday and all night. I'm not sure we know what sleep is anymore. We have nicknamed her “Shock n Awe” and she was every bit of the shock. Okay now pick yourself up off the ground from rolling around laughing. We are getting our sense of humor back and can laugh right with all of you. I would have to confess however, it's been really nice and really special this time around. If you see me and I look sleep deprived, I am! Okay some of it's from fishing too.

Henry's Lake

Henry 's Lake , over all has fished well to great for some and not so well for others. In talking with Damon Keen the fishery's manager he states that basic theme that some are doing really well while others are struggling to land a fish. In our talking with others this is a common theme we have found as well. Mother nature has had a hand in things as well as some have found out. Henry's for the opener was wild and whacky to say the least for weather. Some experienced all four seasons wrapped up into one day. For those that braved that first weekend they saw some decent fishing. Bill found plenty of fish to catch and had some successful outings. Bill and his guests have done well with catching some big fish on their outings. We have talked with others that did really well and those that gave up and headed to warmer surroundings. I have a friend in the area that boated 41 fish during the Memorial Day weekend. Myself, I avoided the weekend all together for family reasons. During and since the opener Henry's has produced big fish and good numbers of fish, for some that is. I found out when I came off the lake on Friday of last week after our slow day some folks were down right unhappy with no fish. The night before on Thursday night we did very well with 11 fish in the boat ranging from 3lbs to 11lbs and we only saw one other boat on the water.

Long and short of it is this, if you find active fish, you present the right fly, at the right depth you do really well. So far the flies that are producing well are the BH Electric Black, Red Naked Lady, Brown CB and the California along with some others producing from time to time. The areas on the lake seem to be the middle of the lake, Duck creek, Stayley's, Cliffs and the County Boat dock.

*** One note to make is that due to the extremely warm weather we have had on and off this year, we are starting to see the damsel start to hatch a little early. We are seeing some storms roll in that bring some colder weather that may slow the hatch down. The way it's been we should see more and more over the next few days. Be ready!

Sheridan Lake

Sheridan Lake , like Henry's, was and has been affected by Mother Nature. With those early hot days the snow out of the Kick Creek basin came gushing out and filled the lake with dirty water. We even cancelled some early trips in May due to this water issue. The water temperature was really cold and the fish just didn't fire up early like they did last year. It has steadily improved over the course of the last few weeks. The bug activity has increased with Midges and Callibaetis being the predominant bug hatches to this point. I talked with Mike, the lake manager, tonight June 13th and he stated that it's fishing well at this point and better than it has all season. The big fish have not shown up in the catch but are starting to appear and be more active in taking Midges and Calliebaetis. There are a few big fish being caught right now to make it more interesting than we have seen to date. Overall, your outing right now may consist of good fish numbers inching to a 25 fish day with fish in the 11/2 pound to 21/2 pound being typical along with a fish in the 4 to 6lb range just to make things interesting. The largest so far has been a 10 pound fish early in the season before things really got nasty.

This season's weather so far has been different than last year and so have the fly selections. The flies we caught fish last year on have not produced a fish to date. We now have a new fly called “The Pumpkin”. It has been the only fly that has consistently caught fish. The second runner up has been the Green Hornet introduced to us by Dennis Byington. There have been some other flies that have worked but those are the top two flies for 90%of the fish caught so far this year. As of June 13th they both are still the dynamic duo.

The midges along with all the other bugs have come on strong in the last week. We are seeing some strong Callibaetis and Midge hatches along with other aquatic bug life. The highlight is that the damsels are starting to hatch and getting buggy. Should know more as the week progresses but it's coming so be prepared. It was awesome fishing last year when the damsel hatch got into full swing especially for big fish. With the midges hatching in greater quantities we are seeing more and more big fish getting active.

We do have the shop open again this year at Ponds Lodge. We are going to be open on Wednesday thru Saturday with longer hours on those days. Love to have you all stop in and say Hi. We are becoming more and more of a resource for not only flies but resources for equipment (rods & reels) and fly tying materials (hackles, dubbings). We now have dealership opportunities with most everyone in the fishing industry such as RIO , Dan Bailey, Whiting Farms, TFO, Spirit River , Hareline and Anglers Choice etc.. If you are looking for items and some great prices give us a call. We are also adding credit card capability to make it easier on everyone wanting to purchase items and pay for trips. We soon will have all this on line with a full shopping cart system. This should really make it easier so look for it soon. We are still a work in progress.
