Hope the fall has treated you all well. The snow is coming early. The Tetons have really got dumped on in the last couple of weeks. I have actually been snowed on three times already and it's not even the end of October. Just remember that we fish till the end of November. The weather could be really interesting in November!
The fishing is best described as hit and miss. The pictures will give you some idea as to the diversity of the weather we have had this October. The lake has been hammered by winter storms one right after another. Prior to the major storms we had some pretty good days on the water as you can tell in the pictures. Sometimes we caught some good days in between storms. At the start of October it seemed like the fish were on the verge of really getting going and then boom all those storms hit one right after another. I'm not sure you can see what the storms are doing to the lake from the pictures but I can assure you that the lake was hammered with some pretty wild north winds. The water has been in terrible condition with some of these storms. The overall temperature of the lake is really cold as well. Not sure it would take a whole lot for the lake to freeze over at this point.
Through the month of October witht they days we could fish. We are catching some nice 3lb to 5lb cutts along with 3lb to 5lb hybrids along with some large hybrids in the 8 to 10 pound range. We have caught a few nice colored brookies but not as many as last year. The better spots to fish have been the Hatchery, Pintail Point, Cliff's and the State Park area. If the storms continue as they have the only real place to fish is the hatchery but the water will still be murky as it was this last week. We did catch fish but it was like fishing at the oceans edge with waves crashing against you while your trying to cast. Just have to call if your coming this way for a moment by moment report.
The fishing from here on in will be determined as much by Mother Nature as anything. I think the fish are there and ready to eat but they need to have some clear water instead of hot chocolate type water. I have fished murky water before but some of this stuff is pretty thick water. I think as the weather settles and gets nice again so will the fish!
The best flies have been the leech patterns. Blacks, Greens and Browns seem to be the top colors. The Brown Crystal, Electric Black, Black, Brown and Olive wooly buggers along with some new flies we are working on. If I can get some time on the computer and the camera this winter we will be posting some of the new flies.
*** We will be offering trips through November 30th as long as weather and fish permit.
The Lake is still producing some fish but not as well as we would like. Not sure why the fish have lock jaw but the storms like Henrys have had some significant impact. I know on one occassion I was stomping around on 5 inches of new snow. It was pretty but not sure the fish agreed. We did catch some fish as you can see in the picture.
The best places to fish have been off the weed beds and down by the dam.
The leech patterns such as the Black Peril are still the main stay along with the reliable pumpkin.
Hope the rest of fall treats you well and it doesn't snow too much too soon.
We will be trying to fish through the month of November and then we will hybernate for a day or two.
