Fly Fishing Newsletter

Hope everyone is moving into the Fall routine well. We have had a little bit of snow, rain, sleet and some warm summer like days. Okay, I know this is Idaho and could happen all in one day which I think on several days did just that.

On to the report on the fall fishing:

Henry's Lake

It's been a mixed bag the last three weeks. We have had some good days, some really off days and some so so days and some poor days. Some of this can be explained to weather, drastic water temperature drops, constant wind and storms stirring up the lake and some bright sunny warm blue bird days. I'm not sure the fish know what to do at this point. Something I cannot control is Mother Nature and the Fish dinning habits. Even on the off days however the fish being caught are really nice fish. The fish we have been catching are mostly the three and four year old fish those weighing about 3 to 6lbs range. We have had some fishing days in the double digits. We have seen some bigger fish into the 8 to 12lb type hooked, landed and lost. We are seeing some nice Brookies being caught as well. They have been a little tougher to find this last week or two but they are there.

If you want a chance to catch trophy trout this is the time!!!

We have had no outstanding days but I think we are on the verge of something fun happening on the lake. We are seeing glimmers of some really outstanding days like today Monday October 2nd. Chris who was taking time to do some fish scouting came across some fish working and could have caught 20 plus fish. He stated it was almost too easy so he tried to fish some different areas and trying some different patterns. When he would come back to the spot he found he caught fish. In talking to several other folks they also had a good day on the lake as well. I think it will only get better.

The areas on the lake that seem to be working and holding fish---Everywhere! The County Boat Dock, Staley Springs, Pintail Point, Howard Creek, North Shore and even Targhee Creek have produced a few fish. It's hard to say where to fish at this point. Each place has times where the fish will turn on and off depending on the time of day. Some fish have been active at times when they are not usually active. Some spots have turned on just as people have left the area.

The best flies like the areas and times to fish are a mix bag as well. If I had to narrow the list it would be the Brown Crystal, Holloween, BH Electric Black, Electric Black, along with a host of other flies with no names.

*** One sour note to report *** When fishing Henry's Lake please report those that are chummmming there way to success. I watched two boats Saturday parked next to each other that thought they were really being sportsmen. Four people per boat catching and taking there sixteen fish a day or maybe more who knows after chumming the area. The fish they did release were mauled and treated poorly in there release. I don't begrudge someone taking home fish as I do once in a while for a nice trout dinner. However, I think there is a sporting/ethical like way of doing it and one that is thoughtless and careless. I know all of you would not appreciate this type of sportsmen. Be on the look out as the incidents are on the rise and let's protect the fishery for everyone.

Sheridan Lake

Sheridan has been steadily producing but like Henry's has been slow to produce a lot of fish. Like Henry's it will produce some exciting fall fishing as the fish get a little more excited about feeding. The fish can be found all over the lake with no real hot spot as of yet. Around the dam seems to be the best spot if you had to pick one particular area to fish.

The flies have remained pretty consistent with the Pumpkin, Leeches of variety of color patterns, Pheasant Tails BH and without, and the Black Pearl.

I know the weather can be touchy and a bit miserable at times but I think there is going to be some really great fall fishing right on into November. Give us a call if you need any information, flies equipment or wanting to book a trip.
