Fly Fishing Newsletter
8-02-2005

Another few weeks have gone by since I last wrote one of these news letters. I'm not a writer for one and never have claimed to be. A lot of you have already figured that out by now so it's not really a news flash. Some folks can sit down and just whip something out in a flash. Those are the ones in school you loved to hate. It takes me a little longer. I also do this late at night usually and sometimes not as coherent as maybe on ought to be.

Let us move onward to the fishing news of the last couple of weeks. Boy did we have some hot days. I mean hot, okay I'm talking about the sun and temperature. Some of those that fished with us during this last period found out how really how hot the fishing can be with that sun bearing down on you for hours on end. There were some days were we got lucky and had some overcast days. Those days by far produced the most fish. I can control some things but not Mother Nature or the fish for that matter.

Henry's Lake

The wind on some days has been a bit pesky and sometimes down right nasty. The bulk of the fishing has been off Targhee Creek. Some fish have been taken off other areas of the lake like, Duck Creek, Stayley's and the middle is still producing some fish.

Some of the fishing off Targhee Creek has been reminiscent of combat fishing during a salmon run. Sometimes you would have thought all the fish in the lake had moved to Targhee Creek area. There are other fish in the lake I promise. It takes a little searching but they are there. The best flies during this period according to Bill have been the Green Naked Lady and the Red Naked Lady. By the way, I didn't name the flies so, no hate mail ladies about the flies and their names. The other flies that have produced are the Brown Crystal Bugger, Mity Mouse, Light Olive Crystal and the Henry's Lake Renegade . We carry all the necessary Henry's Lake flies at the shop. We are located by Ponds Lodge. The hours are from 6am to Noon. The water temperature has started to come down so look for the fish to be on the move again.

Sheridan Lake

The story on Sheridan is a simple one. It got hot and the fished moved to cooler water. There were some caught in other places on the lake but most have been from the boat dock up and into the inlet. Things were a little slower during this period especially when the number of people fishing the lake increased. We have seen some movement this week of some of the fish moving back out into the bigger portion of the lake. We have had several storms go through that brought the water temperature down. If this keeps up the fish will all but move out of the channel/inlet and back out into deeper water.

The fly selection also was simple during this period. Two to three weeks ago it was Damsels, Damsels and more Damsels. Then they shut down on those and then switched to the BH Flash Back pheasant tail. We are seeing some fish being taken with some top water stuff such as caddis, grasshoppers and Turks.
