Fly Fishing Newsletter
March-2005
The fishing season is getting wound up as spring like weather teases us into thinking it's time to fish. For some of us it doesn't take that much we just fish all year. I think they refer to that as a mental type disorder "certifiable". As I get older I'm getting less "certifiable" and a little smarter. The Utah Boat show was great success. We were able to meet a lot of you folks at the show. It was great to share and swap stories about the sport we all love. My partner and I really enjoyed talking with and meeting all of you. As you all know, we had a drawing for some prizes. The following are the lucky winners:
1 st prize Craig Huish B Guide Trip
2 nd prize Chris Norwood B Fly Rod
3 rd prize Natalie George B Fly Line
4 th prize LeGrand Ellison B Box of Flies
Congratulations to all these winners, and we would like to thank all of you that entered the drawing. Through out the upcoming fishing year, we will continue to have drawings and prizes for those who are involved in our newsletter that is located on our web site at www.bsflies.com.
We hope that you will take a look at the site as it develops and take advantage of the special offers that we will have. We will have information about the area's fishing possibilities and especially Henry's Lake.
Henry's Lake
The upcoming year looks like a lot of fun. Fish at Henry's looks good for both numbers and in size. We helped the Fish and Game spawn in February and Damon Keen the fishery manager is very pleased with the lake and how it wintered. The fish wintered well thank in part to some late fall snow storms which brought the level of the lake up over 70%. This helped keep the lakes oxygen levels up which is very helpful to the fish wintering well. The fish are healthy with no signs of stress and appear to be in good numbers. The lake should produce well in the age classes 1,2, and 3's. The age classes of 4's and 5's will be down. The average fish coming in to spawn were mostly age classes 2's and 3's with some 4's with an average length of 17.4 inches.
Here are some planting numbers that might be of interest to some of you.
2003
Hybrids (264,000) Fingerlings
Cutthroats (1.5 mil) Fry
(130,000) Fingerlings
Brook (99,000) Fingerlings
2004
Hybrids (38,250) Fry
Cutthroats (921,000) Fingerlings
Brook (117,000) Fry 2005 Spawning Season
Projected for 2005
Hybrids approx (200,000)
Cutthroats approx (1.3 mil Fry)
Brookies approx (100,000 fry)
In 2003 there were 65,000 more hybrids planted than normal. It was a good thing as egg production didn = t work out well in 2004. However, the Cutt = s and Brooks are up and should take up the slack according to Damon Keen.
Sheridan Lake will be a great opportunity for a guide trip. It has a great population of Kamloops and great scenery. Island Park Res will be an unknown quality with several years of draw down. I know last year some folks did really well in early June. Ririe has great numbers of fish and a wide variety of species. The numbers are up in all areas and will provide a great opportunity for fly fishermen. This is a lake to be on early in the year and later in the year when all the water skiing is completed. However, in some of the areas on the lake some great small mouth bass fishing can be fun all year in spite of the water skiers.
